What's on

Prosperous Tang
In the 1980s, the sudden collapse of half of a pagoda at the 1,800-year-old Famen Temple in Fufeng county, Shaanxi province, revealed an astonishing secret: a hidden underground palace filled with dazzling treasures that testified to the popularity of Buddhism during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and its prosperity. More than 2,000 relics were unearthed, including gold and silver wares, glass, pottery, and the famed "secret color" porcelain with its distinctive celadon hues, all reflecting the extravagance of a flourishing empire. The Tang Dynasty Is Prosperous, now on view at the Zhejiang Provincial Museum in Hangzhou, presents a selection of these invaluable objects from the Famen Temple, illuminating the economy, art, culture, and religious life of the era. The exhibition runs until Oct 10.
