Sinopec's advancements in gas production fuel China's energy independence

Test production at two evaluation wells belonging to China Petroleum & Chemical Corp, also known as Sinopec, at Ziyang shale gas field in Sichuan province exceeded one million cubic meters, with one well hitting a record high for domestic shale gas testing, the company said on Wednesday.
The Ziye 2-501HF well produced 1.407 million cubic meters per day during testing, setting a new national record, Sinopec, the world's largest refiner, said.
The company said the results demonstrate the potential for efficient development of ultra-deep shale gas in the Sichuan Basin, which is strategically important for China's energy security.
The Ziyang area presents complex geological and engineering challenges —featuring thick, difficult-to-drill formations.
China, rich in coal resources but lacking in gas, has long been a major importer of oil and gas. The exploration and development of shale gas is of strategic importance for China's energy landscape, Sinopec said.
China's has become increasingly self-sufficient in addressing its energy needs as domestic oil and gas production has improved. Fueled by advancements in exploration and production technologies, China has bolstered the energy resilience of its economy, which ranks as the second-largest in the world.
