China condemned the United States on Wednesday for once again openly bringing up the fallacy that "Taiwan's status is undetermined," accusing Washington of deliberately misleading international public opinion.

"China urges the US to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, and stop aiding and abetting 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces in any form," Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a regular news briefing in Beijing.

Lin also warned the US to stop interfering in China's internal affairs, stressing that "no individual or force can stop the historical trend that China will and must achieve reunification."

The remarks came after a US State Department spokesperson reportedly endorsed a recent statement from the American Institute in Taiwan, which questioned China's sovereignty over the Taiwan region by suggesting that World War II declarations had not determined the island's ultimate political status.

Lin countered, stating that the restoration of Taiwan to China is an integral part of the outcomes of the WWII victory and the post-war international order.

He referenced the Cairo Declaration, issued in 1943 by China, the US and the United Kingdom, that explicitly stated that Japan would be stripped of all Pacific islands it had seized or occupied.

According to the spokesman, the Potsdam Proclamation, issued in 1945 reaffirmed that the terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out and Japan shall return all territories it illegally invaded. In the same year, the Japanese government pledged in the Japanese Instrument of Surrender to faithfully fulfill the obligations enshrined in the provisions of the Potsdam Proclamation.

"The series of instruments with legal effect under international law have all clearly affirmed China's sovereignty over Taiwan," Lin said.

He added that as a signatory to the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, the US is fully aware of this undeniable historical and legal fact.

Yet, the US has repeatedly raised the false claim of "Taiwan's undetermined status", undermining China's legitimate efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and sending a gravely wrong signal to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, he said.

"History brooks no falsification. The one-China principle is a prevailing consensus in the international community. The unilateral distortions from the US cannot shake the international commitment to the one-China principle," Lin said.
