If you go

Getting there

Most international travelers will fly to Haikou or Sanya. Major coastal hubs for water sports include Haikou, Wanning, Lingshui and Sanya. The Hainan Coastal Scenic Highway is ideal for a road trip.

Alternatively, the efficient Hainan Circular High-Speed Railway connects cities along the coast. A train ticket from Haikou to Wanning costs about 70 yuan ($10).

Where to stay

? Shimei Bay offers a range of upscale resort hotels.

? Riyue Bay has more affordable accommodation options, primarily rental apartments and guesthouses, 200-400 yuan per night.

Activities

? Surfing

Cost: A two-hour beginner lesson in Riyue Bay costs 350-700 yuan, including the use of a surfboard, wetsuit or rash guard, and sunscreen balm.

Booking: Find top-rated clubs on online travel agency platforms or visit them in person to compare options.

? Sailing and diving

A package in Shimei Bay includes a group yacht trip, snorkeling, sea fishing and a banana boat ride, costing about 500 yuan per person for a three-hour experience. Scuba diving can be added for about 200 yuan. For professional photo or video services, budget an additional 380 yuan or more.

Traveler tips

? What to bring: Pack your swimsuit and a towel. If you wear contact lenses, bring a spare pair. A surf hat for sun protection is recommended.

? Planning: Book activities in advance through reputable platforms, especially during peak holiday seasons. Always confirm what is included in the price.

? Safety: For water sports, choose licensed operators that provide safety equipment and briefings. Check weather and sea conditions before heading out.
