Tibet to build first resource recycling market

(Xinhua) Updated: 2012-06-12 14:12

LHASA - Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region will start constructing its first resource recycling market at the end of June in the regional capital of Lhasa.

With a total investment of 26 million yuan ($4.1 million), the market is designed to recycle 200,000 tons of resources annually, such as metal, plastic and paper, according to Li Zhiqing, manager-general of a local waste recycling company undertaking the project, on Monday.

The market will be located 12 km away from downtown Lhasa in Doilungdeqen county and cover an area of 15.5 hectares, Li said.

The project is expected to be completed in October and the market is set to be put into use by the end of this year, he said.

Currently, most waste generated in Tibet is transported to other regions and recycled there.

Tibet's environmental condition has attracted wide attention at home and abroad and the resource recycling market in Lhasa will benefit the region's urban environment, said Zhou Hui, deputy head of the regional commerce department.
