China's imports and exports remained in good shape during the first quarter despite the impact of the global economic slowdown and high international commodity prices, Commerce Minister Chen Deming said Tuesday.

"Judging from the foreign trade data for the first three months (of the year), our country's imports and exports were good in general. Some impact had been expected (from global economic conditions and international commodity prices) but were within reasonable bounds," Chen was quoted as saying at the Guangzhou trade fair.

China's trade surplus fell 10.96 percent year-on-year in the first quarter to $41.43 billion, with rising international oil and raw material prices boosting imports while the effects of the US subprime crisis hurt exports.
