Consumer price index up 1.8% in May

China's general consumer price index reported a 1.8 percent year-on-year increase in May, a monthly report released by the National Bureau of Statistics said on Monday.

The report said the consumer price index in cities rose 1.4 percent from the same month in 2004, and that in rural areas, up 2.4 percent.

Compared with the price level in April, the price index rose 0.2 percent.

According to the report, food prices rose 2.8 percent from April, grain price, however, dropped 1.6 percent, and that of poultry and meat rose 6.9 percent, egg's price reported a rise of 11.9 percent, the highest, and that of aquatic products, up 3 percent, and vegetables, 10.1 percent.

The price of non-staple food increased 1.2 percent, the report said.

Meanwhile, clothing prices decreased by 2.2 percent, with the garment price declining by 2.3 percent, the report said.

In May, the price of water, electricity and fuel also saw a rise of 8.9 percent from April, with the price of construction and furnishing materials climbing 2.9 percent and the housing rental price increasing 2.2 percent.
