“Pot”的意思是鍋子,luck是運氣。而Potluck作為一個詞,指的是美國一種經常舉行的聚會形式。也就是在某一個人,或幾個人的提議下舉行一個午餐會或晚餐會,但是參加聚會的每個人都要帶一個菜或者帶一種飯后甜食。主人除了為聚會提供場地外,也只要準備一個菜,或買一些飲料就行了。這就叫作:“Potluck lunch” or “potluck supper”
Potluck還有另外一個意思,那就是:有什么就要什么。用在吃的方面就成了:有什么吃什么的意思。比如,一個人碰到了好幾年沒見面的老朋友,他說:
“Say, Charley, if you don’t have plans for tonight, why don’t you come out to our house and take potluck with us. Helen won’t have time to cook anything special, but she can put an extra plate on the table for you.”
