Bishan Temple

Updated : 2014-10-20

Bishan (Verdant Hill) Temple gets its name from it position at the foot of Yedou Peak, North Top, where it is surrounded by verdant mountains, 2 km to the northeast of Taihuai. It was built in the Yingzong period of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and has four halls -- Heavenly King, Leiyin, Jietang, and Mile. It is the largest "10-quarter" temple on Wutai, referring to a place where all monks and lay Buddhists can get accommodation and meals for free. Also, if they leave without sufficient travel money , the temple can give them some. Many pilgrims regard Bishan as a place they must visit. The temple has also been called Puji Temple, as There is a tradition in Bishan Temple that all monks and lay Buddhists are provided with free accommodation and meals if they decide to stay and no one has the right to expel them. If they do not have enough travel expenses when leaving, Bishan Temple will provide some money, so it is also called a "relief shelter". Bishan is a key national temple, with State Council recognition.
