Madina Khadziyeva of the Interior Ministry's regional branch in Ingushetia says an explosive device was placed next to the local police headquarters in the city of Nazran.

She said an as yet unknown number of people were killed and wounded in the explosion early Monday.

Ingushetia, which borders Chechnya to the west, has been rocked by shootings, bombings and other attacks targeting police and government officials.

The province's Kremlin-appointed president, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, was badly wounded in a bombing in June.
