Typhoon Mitag, the 17th typhoon of this year, made landfall along the coast of the urban area of Shanwei, Guangdong province, at around 2:50 pm on Friday, with an intensity classified as a severe tropical storm, according to local meteorological authorities.

Parts of southeastern Fujian province and central to eastern Guangdong experienced heavy to torrential rain. In some areas of southeastern Guangdong, there was extremely heavy rain, with isolated instances of exceptionally heavy downpours.

Classes in Shanwei were suspended on Friday, including vocational schools, kindergartens, and off-campus training institutions. Some districts of the neighboring city of Huizhou also suspended school classes.

The typhoon is expected to move in a northwestern direction at a speed of 10-15 kilometers per hour, with its intensity gradually weakening, according to the Guangdong Meteorological Observatory.

At 10:00 on Friday, the provincial flood control, drought relief, and windstorm prevention headquarters upgraded the level-IV emergency response for windstorm prevention to a level-III emergency response. China has a four-tier emergency response system, with Level I being the most severe response.
