The Kanas scenic area in Altay, Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, has suspended all outdoor hiking activities following a heavy snowstorm that hit the area on Sunday, according to an official announcement released on Tuesday morning.

The management committee of the Kanas scenic area has prohibited individuals and organizations from entering hiking trails or engaging in outdoor activities, including hiking, crossing and camping, while the scenic area remains temporarily closed.

Those who enter the hiking route without permission in violation of regulations or get into danger as a result and require rescue will be held responsible for the associated rescue costs based on China's tourism law, the announcement said.

The snowstorm caused severe snow and ice accumulation on several sections of Highway S232, leading to difficult road conditions and leaving many tourists and vehicles stranded, according to a report by China Central Television.

By Monday afternoon, road departments had cleared the snow and ice, restoring traffic access and ensuring all stranded tourists reached their destinations.
